LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

Dear Readers,

I am excited to introduce this month's issue of our magazine, which is dedicated to the theme of Earth Month! April is a special month for many of us who care about the environment, and we wanted to use this opportunity to highlight some of the critical issues we face as a planet.

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are all challenges that require our urgent attention. At the same time, we believe that it's important to focus on solutions and actions that individuals, communities, and businesses can take to help address these challenges. That's why this issue is centered around inspiring and empowering our readers to make positive changes in their own lives.

We have brought together a diverse group of experts and writers to share their perspectives and insights on a range of topics related to sustainability and environmental responsibility. From sustainable agriculture to sustainable tourism to sustainable building design, we explore a wide range of issues that are critical to creating a more sustainable world.

At the heart of this issue is the belief that we all have a role to play in creating a more sustainable future. Whether it's by making small changes in our daily lives or advocating for larger systemic changes, we can all make a positive impact. We hope that this issue will inspire you to take action and become more engaged in the critical work of protecting our planet.

As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions for future issues. Thank you for joining us on this journey towards a more sustainable world.

Sincerely,

Supriya Verma, WELL AP

APRIL 2023: SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Introducing The Lightship L1: The First Purpose-Built All-Electric RV

The electric vehicle (EV) industry has been experiencing rapid growth and innovation in recent years, with many companies introducing new models and technologies to improve the driving experience and reduce emissions. EVs offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, and their popularity is expected to continue to rise as more people seek to reduce their carbon footprint.

One of the most significant challenges for EVs has been the range of the vehicles, but as technology has improved, so has the range of EVs. Nowadays, many electric cars have a range of over 200 miles on a single charge, and some models are even capable of traveling over 400 miles on a single charge. This makes EVs more practical for longer trips and eliminates the range anxiety that some people feel.

One of the areas in which EV innovation has been particularly exciting is in the realm of recreational vehicles (RVs). – Lightship, America’s first all-electric recreational vehicle (RV) company, announced the launch of the Lightship L1 earlier in March — an aerodynamic, battery-powered travel trailer and the first purpose-built travel trailer with a self-propulsion system that enables near zero range or mile-per-gallon efficiency loss for the vehicle towing it.

APRIL 2023: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Agriculture Canada's BioMob Project Digitizes Biodiversity Data Points For Climate Adaptation

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in agriculture, providing solutions for climate change adaptation and protection against future threats. Scientists have long turned to nature for answers, but where do they begin when nature's toolbox is vast and largely unexplored? The answer lies in the digitization of biological reference collections, an initiative recently undertaken by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).

AAFC's biological reference collections hold over 19 million physical specimens of plants, insects, fungi, bacteria, and nematodes in Ottawa, Ontario. With specimens dating back centuries and identified by handwritten or typewritten labels, many of these specimens remained largely hidden and unknown. The digitization initiative known as "Biological Collections and Data Mobilization" or "BioMob" for short, aimed to digitally catalogue the specimens and make them accessible to researchers.

APRIL 2023: THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

To Further ESG and Carbon Commitments, Start with Signage: Gensler

Signage may seem like an afterthought, but it can have a surprisingly large impact on carbon reduction goals. By prioritizing environmentally friendly materials like cardboard, wood, and post-consumer recycled composites, the embodied carbon footprint of interior signage systems can be significantly reduced. Gensler's Embodied Carbon Calculator was developed to compare and identify the embodied carbon in materials commonly used in interior signage systems. By reducing the embodied carbon footprint of their signage, a client was able to prevent 435 pounds of coal from being burned every time the sign system was implemented, contributing to their commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. With millennials and Gen Z prioritizing sustainability in their career choices, signage is an easy and scalable way to put an organization's carbon commitments in front of team members daily.

APRIL 2023: RENEWABLE ENERGY

The Changing Face of Economic Growth: How Carbon Emissions are No Longer the Driving Force

Carbon emissions have traditionally been associated with economic growth because industries such as manufacturing, transportation, and construction require energy, often produced through burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. As economies have grown in the past, so has the demand for energy, leading to an increase in carbon emissions.

However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which produce little to no carbon emissions. This shift has been driven by several factors, including concerns over climate change and the increasing affordability and efficiency of renewable energy technologies.

ESG 17 FOCUS POINTS 2023

APRIL 2023: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

2023's Top 17 ESG, Climate & Sustainability Focus Points For Sustainable Economic Development

2022 has undoubtedly been a tumultuous year - from COVID, to conflict, to the climate crisis. However, the challenges still remain, and while it’s great to be optimistic for 2023, it is wise to understand that we need to be practical. Solutions to tackle these prevailing challenges will not appear on their own - we need immediate action.

Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time. It is a global phenomenon that can impact every sector of society and economy. The world needs to be more aware of this issue, and we need to find solutions for it as soon as possible. On the other hand, ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. These are the three key areas that are being looked at by investors to make sure that they are investing in a sustainable way. In order to invest responsibly, one must consider these three aspects of the company they are investing in.

The world is not taking the issue of climate change and the need for sustainability seriously, and it's time for that to change. Politicians need to take the issue more seriously and start enacting regulations on industries that produce greenhouse gases. Individuals should also be more conscious about their carbon footprint. We need to fix this problem before it's too late.

That’s why we’ve put together a checklist of 17 long-term focus points - not short-term trends - spanning ESG, climate change, and sustainability that the world needs to work towards faster and extra hard in 2023 for achieving economically viable sustainable development by 2030 while factoring in the loss of progress brought about by the unprecedented circumstances of 2022.

RESOURCE IPCC SYNTHESIS REPORT

APRIL 2023: CLIMATE CHANGE

AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023

The IPCC finalized the Synthesis Report for the Sixth Assessment Report during the Panel's 58th Session held in Interlaken, Switzerland from 13 - 19 March 2023.

Continued greenhouse gas emissions will lead to increasing global warming, with the best estimate of reaching 1.5°C in the near term in considered scenarios and modelled pathways. Every increment of global warming will intensify multiple and concurrent hazards (high confidence). Deep, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions would lead to a discernible slowdown in global warming within around two decades, and also to discernible changes in atmospheric composition within a few years.

For any given future warming level, many climate-related risks are higher than assessed in AR5, and projected long-term impacts are up to multiple times higher than currently observed (high confidence). Risks and projected adverse impacts and related losses and damages from climate change escalate with every increment of global warming (very high confidence). Climatic and non-climatic risks will increasingly interact, creating compound and cascading risks that are more complex and difficult to manage.
